St George in dreamland, hammer Mugger cement

St George manager Mart Nooij enjoyed a dream Premier League second round start as St George swept past Mugger Cement with a superb display.

A magnificent St George display earned us a 4-0 home win over Mugger cement on Sunday. St George defender Abebaw Butako led from the front for the horsemen, shoot from outside the penalty box began at a frantic pace with an energized early opener. St George started the game with plenty of intent and the early pressure led to the breakthrough in just the sixth minute. Williamplayed in Minyahel to the left-hand side of the penalty area and his low cross was deflected straight into the path of the Cameroonian, continuing his run into the box, who headed past the wrong-footed Mugger keeper.

In the second half, St George did deservedly double their lead. Minyahel Teshome supplied Umed Ukuri and he showed great vision to play a nonchalant pass straight intoFitsum's path. The former Mugger player drove at Mugger defense onto his favored right foot before firing expertly across Mugger Keeper into the far corner and he steered a shot past Mugger Keeper for St George's second .

It was a resounding performance by an irrepressible-looking St George, with summer signings Minyahle Teshome and Behailu Assefa showed fantastic performance and appearing accomplished throughout. The hosts, whose only sour note was losing defender Saladin Bargecho with what looked like a ham string injury, could easily have been two goals to the good before they actually took the lead. First Fitsum, and then Umed, drew fine saves from Mugger goal keeper after penetrating runs down the right by William Esanjo.

This year’s Ethiopian top goal scorer Umed Ukuri scored his 11th and 12 league goal of the season in this match. Umed is now leading the Ethiopian goal scoring record by twelve goals.

The win takes St George to 39 points with 27 goal difference in the 2006 Ethiopian premier league table. Ethiopia coffee has 28 points with one game in hand and Commercial bank is third with 24 points. St George next tie will be an away match against Wolayta Dicha in Bodeti stadium

Ethiopia Knockout cup fifth round, Addis Ababa Stadium – St George 1 (Umed Ukuri 89’)  -  Sidama Coffee 0

St George booked their place in the Ethiopian Knockout cup semi-finals with a 1-0 win over Sidama Coffee Yesterday. Umed Ukuriwas denied a clear-cut penalty asSt Georgedominated the second half of our Ethiopian Knockout Cup fifth round tie and somehow wins Sidama Coffee1-0 in the Addis Ababa stadium.

After a quite even game, the Horsemen punished Sidama in the final stages, with the Ethiopian premier league high goal scorer Umed Ukuri scoring a goal in a final minute of the game.

St George is one of the greatest teams of the modern era, we might end up being the greatest team of the modern era, but either way we were far too good for Sidama Coffee. Sidama kept the monster at bay for a while, they even tried to take the lead in different occasions, but when the true might of St George was unleashed upon them, they had no response.

The horsemen had defended manfully during an ideal away display in the first half  and typically had the vast majority of play . St George’s youngster Saladin Bargecho led a resolute the Horsemen defense in the opening 45 minutes.

In the 89th minute Abebaw Butako crossed from the left and with Sidama’s centre-backs distracted by Fitsum Gmariam’s dart into the six-yard box, Umed scored it with his header.

2nd April World Autism Awareness Day: Number of St George Supporters to participate in Walk for Autism Awareness

2nd  April  World Autism Awareness Day: Number of St George Supporters  to participate in Walk for Autism Awareness

It will be the largest participation ever! This weekend April 6 - World Autism Awareness Day - over 2,000 children of two primary schools and a number of St George fans are expected to participate in the campaign walking for Autism Awareness. The walk will be held on the coming Sunday beginning from Imperial Hotel to Bole Bridge.

Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that manifests itself during the first three years of life. The rate of autism in all regions of the world is high and it has a tremendous impact on children, their families, communities and societies.

Walking for Autism Awareness takes place every year around April 2, UN Autism Awareness Day. The objective is twofold: to make the society aware of the Autism in the world and to raise money for Autistic children.

Nehemiah Center’s mission is to provide care, instruction and support for children with autism and related disabilities - promoting cognitive, emotional and relational growth through individualized programs, while providing counseling and support to parents, especially mothers as they deal with these particularly difficult challenges; teaching the parents to become active participants in their child’s education and development; and finally, to raise public awareness of the nature and prevalence of Autistic Spectrum Disorders.

Walking for Autism Awareness in Addis Ababa is an initiative of Nehemiah Autism Center, Ethiopia’s leading autism center and advocacy organization, and organizes events and seminars on Autism in the society to turn their lights blue on April 2nd to promote autism awareness.

St George foot ball club is glad in collaborating with Nehemiah Autism center.

St George 2-1 Dedebit: St George’s pressing wins the game

St George kept a firm grip on the Ethiopian Premier League title race with a deserved victory against Dedebit at Addis Abeba Stadium.

Martinus Ignatius "Mart" Nooij recorded his twelve league victory as St George manager with a crushing win over Dedebit. Nooij continued with Umed Ukuri upfront rather than Fitsum Gebremariam. In midfield, Nooij was without William and Mentsenot, he left out them and played Degu Debebe in the centre of midfield alongside Adane Girma. This game was done and dusted within the second quarter – St George were 2-1, and the rest of the game was simply a question how many St George would score.

The meeting had been billed as the battle of the midfielders between St George's Adane Girma and Dedebit counterpart Sheibou Jebriel.

The key feature of the game was St George’s brilliantly effective midfield pressure, and St George actually pressed in higher positions, causing Dedebit’s centre-backs and holding midfielder problems, as well as the more advanced players. Time and time again, The Horsemen won possession in central zones and immediately turned this into a quick counter-attack, and often a promising goal scoring opportunity.

The man who started the pressing was Samuel Sanumi, one of the most tactically disciplined number tens you’ll find in Ethiopia. Although his role wasn’t as spectacular as that of other St George players, because Samson Tilahun isn’t particularly mobile and therefore Samuel didn't have to work particularly hard to shut him down, denying Samson time on the ball harmed Dedebit’s passing, and was one of the main reasons they couldn't work the ball through midfield.

The more energetic pressing came from deeper positions, where Degu and Adane were fielded as dual defensive midfielders, but played extremely proactive roles, pushing forward and closing down Tadele Mengesha and Henok repeatedly.

And it was Adane Girma who made the decisive contribution as he put the Horsemen ahead with a brilliant Second-half finish. The last 10 minutes were not as interesting as all that, though, just as he did at Commercial Banks last week, Robert Odonkara produced a save in stoppage time to make sure St George got the result, palming over a long shot from Mesfen Kidane that was about to dip under his bar.

In the final minutes of the match Target man, talisman, Umed Ukuri is looking every elegant inch the man for all reasons in the title race. He scored his 10th Premier League goal of the season, and created the first for Adane Girma, filling with belief those St George fans singing for umed that the No 11 will reflect their title total come  June.

St George Football Team Visits St Peter TB Specialized Hospital

St George football team took time after Tuesday’s practice to pay a very valuable visit to St Peter TB Specialized Hospital. All St George players, head coach Mart Nooij and staff members visited many of the young and old patients bringing laughter and much needed inspiration to a number of them. However, they say it was also a tremendous life-learning experience for each of them.

On the program St George players Degu Debebe and Adane Girma has been appointed as goodwill ambassador as they joins St Peter hospital campaign against Tuberculosis.

“I have never had awareness about TB before but now after the visit I have a little bit awareness regarding the diseases and decided to do my best as much as possible using my profession,” said Degu Debebe.

Adane Girma on his part said that he has known about the disease as he lost his mother because of TB. He also said that he would try his best to prevent TB.

Hospital General Manager Representative Tsegaye Korsa appreciated the willingness of the club members to pay a visit and contribute their share in the efforts of the hospital. He further noted that the visit could be taken as an example to others.

He pointed out that the World TB Day would be commemorated with the 5-km march to be held here. In addition, handing over the logo was part of the event.

St. Peter TB Specialized Hospital was established in 1955 EC by His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile- Silassie I.

Sanumi the difference for St George against Banks

Sanumi the difference for St George against Banks

Samuel Sanumi punished Ethiopia Niged Bank FC once more with the winner as St George came out and widen the gap on top in the battle with our Premier League contenders Banks in Addis Ababa Stadium.

Banks will still be delighted with their start to the season but this was the Horsemen’s day and St George coach Mart Nooij will now feel that they are rebuilding momentum after St George lost against Wolayeta Dicah in the twelve week of Ethiopian premier league.

It was the familiar figure of Sanumi who decided the destiny of this game, getting away from Tesfaye Dibaba to meet Adane Girma's delivery and direct a fine header over Abel Abebe on the line.

St George were outstanding and the way in which they celebrated afterwards, with manager Mart Nooij out on the pitch, showed that the belief is flooding back. It is eleven victories in twelve matches now. The spectators were speaking after Tsegaye Kidanemariam's side suffered a 1-0 defeat on Sunday, a result that sees them fall ten points behind the league leaders St George.

It was a remarkable defensive performance by the Horsemen, carrying out Mart Nooij's instructions to a tee, and while we lived dangerously at times, it was a result our bravery merited in the end.

Elias Mamo and Filip Dawzi had gone close to opening the scoring for Banks in the first half, while after the break Isach Isende saved well from Abel Abebe.

Ultimately, it was a result which stands us in good stead as we make our difference to eight points, but our immediate attention now turns to a crucial league match against Dedebit on Sunday.

St George 6-0 AE Ramassa: The Horsemen run riot over defenseless Ramassa

Adane Girma was in impressive form as St George completed a 6-0 win over AE Ramassa in Addis Ababa. The first half provided very little in the way of, well, small thing from either St George or Ramassa. Fortunately for those waking up late, the second half gave plenty of action. Unfortunately for Ramassa fans, all that action came from one direction.
