Olympics and Ethiopia

By Solomon Amare

Ethiopia took part in 10 Olympic Games in its entire history not counting its Participation in the forthcoming Beijing Olympics and has won medals in 9 of them. It did not win medals in its first participation in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Ethiopia also failed to take part in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and the 1988 Seoul Olympics for political reasons. Ethiopia also withdrew from the 1976 Montreal Olympics after traveling to Canada protesting against the participation of the then South Africa which was under racist Apartheid rule. Ethiopia’s first Olympic Medal came from the legendary Abebe Bikila who ran bare footed and won the Marathon event in the 1960 Rome Olympics. This is the first Gold Medal not only for Abebe but also for Ethiopia and Africa too. Since then Ethiopia won Medals in all the Olympics it took part.
