Ethiopian soccer clubs to establish new football league - APA-Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Over 40 sports clubs in Ethiopia announced on Sunday plans to establish a national football league. The football league, according to the clubs, will be launched within a few weeks time, which is expected to tackle the country’s football problem. The Ethiopian Football Federation, currently under FIFA sanctions, said that a total of 41 football clubs of the country’s premier league will be part of the new league. “The league takes from the experiences of other African countries football leagues. It will help us to solve the country’s football problems as well as to undertake capacity building for referees,” said the federation. The Federation was sanctioned by FIFA since last June after the sacking of the former president and the election of its own executive council. FIFA continues to demand for the return of the former president and his administration while the current administration has agreed to continue dialogue with FIFA on the issue. As a result of the FIFA sanctions, the Ethiopian national football team was unable to participate in the ongoing joint African Nations Cup and World Cup qualifiers. (Source: African Press Agency)

St George Presents Home-made Brazilian Soccer St George FC have continued their impressive performance and have enjoyed a deserved and convincing 1-0 victory over their arch-rivals Coffee FC in the 12th round oft he Ethiopian premier-league. The league leaders who trashed Trans FC 5-0 on Wednesday came to this match with a much boosted motivation to the Saturday’s Ethiopian el clasico. Having lost two matches in a row and 11 points behind, Coffee FC played not only under intense pressure to win for pride but also to secure a win over their arch-rivals that would surely help them to be in the track for the title race and regain team confidence for subsequent games. St George dominated possession, but failed to unlock, who put at least 8 players behind the ball at any one time during the game. They had to work hard against a side that opted for a totally destructive football and a terrible referring to put the ball behind the back of the net. Despite all these, St George created numerous scoring opportunities through out the game but had to wait until the 75th minute to fire a rather late winner after a beautiful one-two Brazilian jogo-bono style of play between midfielder Mulalem Regassa and striker Biniam Assefa, whose low-drive shot from the edge of the box left Coffee Golie, Zewdu, helpless. St George’s performance especially in their last three matches including this one with Coffee has outclassed the rest of the teams in the league.
